INDIANAPOLIS - Northern Kentucky University has been selected to repeat as Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball champion by the league coaches, the GLVC office released Wednesday.

NKU collected 168 total points and 12 first-place votes to easily outdistance Rockhurst for the top spot in the 2007 preseason poll. Rockhurst finished with 146 total points and the remaining two first-place votes. Quincy followed in third with 142 total points.

Southern Illinois at Edwardsville tallied 138 total points to finish fourth in the poll and was followed by Saint Joseph’s to round out the top five.

NKU posted a 42-20-1 record in 2006 and returns a strong nucleus of talent from last season’s championship squad. Senior shortstop Kory Lonergan and senior left-handed pitcher Josh Bruns were first team All-GLVC selections last spring, and senior right-hander Matt Marksbury - a second team All-GLVC pick - is also back to solidify the Norse pitching staff.

Lonergan, a Dixie Heights High School graduate, batted .292 with 10 doubles and 26 runs batted in. He also stole 23 bases and scored a team-leading 40 runs.

Bruns, named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II preseason All-America Team, posted an 8-2 record with a 2.86 earned run average last season. The 6-foot-2 left-hander struck out 64 batters and walked just 11 in 78 2/3 innings on the mound as NKU captured the GLVC championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Marksbury, a Norwood High School graduate, finished with a 6-3 record and a 2.09 ERA last season. He also hurled two shutouts and walked just 15 batters in 77 2/3 innings on the mound.

Todd Asalon led NKU to a 36-11-1 conference record last season and collected the school’s third title in the last five years. He was also named GLVC Coach of the Year in 2006.

NKU, Quincy, Rockhurst and SIUE are ranked in Collegiate Baseball's preseason NCAA Division II poll. The Norse are ranked 23rd, Quincy is 27th, Rockhurst is 34th, and SIUE is 37th.

NKU begins the season Feb. 17 with a doubleheader at Delta State. The Norse conclude that series with a single game Feb. 18.
