SPRINGFIELD,
Mo. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team wrapped up
a successful four-game series against Drury on Sunday afternoon
by posting a 2-0 win over the Panthers in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
NKU won three
of the four games this weekend to improve to 12-16 overall, 10-6
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Norse swept a doubleheader
from Drury on Saturday, using a nine-run outburst in the seventh
inning of the opener to stun the Panthers, 11-6, and later pulling
out a 6-5 victory in 12 innings.
On Sunday, NKU
right-hander Kevin Quick hurled a three-hit shutout in the nightcap.
The Norse pushed across runs in the second and fifth innings to
take the seven-inning, non-conference game.
In the opener,
Drury held off the Norse, 4-3. That game counted in the GLVC standings.
On Saturday,
Jon Back hit a two-run homer and added a two-run single - both in
the seventh inning - to key the NKU rally in the opener. The Norse
trailed 6-2 going into their final at-bat but scored nine runs to
take the contest.
NKU completed
the sweep Saturday by scoring twice in the top of the 12th and holding
on for the 6-5 win. Jake Shaffer gave NKU a 5-4 lead with an RBI
single, and Kevin Dusold drove in a run by getting hit by a pitch
with the bases loaded.
Nathan Jones
notched the save in the second game for the Norse, who will play
host to Saint Joseph’s at noon Tuesday at Champion Window
Field in Florence, Ky.
