HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - For the fifth time in the past seven years,
Northern Kentucky University has captured the Great Lakes Valley
Conference All-Sports Trophy.
The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is based upon each institution’s
finish in each conference championship in which it participates.
NKU also captured the award in 2000, ’01, ’02 and ’05.
NKU claimed GLVC championships in baseball, women’s basketball,
men’s golf and women’s soccer during the 2005-06 academic
year to repeat as the GLVC All-Sports Trophy winner. NKU totaled
128 points to edge runner-up Southern Illinois at Edwardsville (126.5
points) for the GLVC All-Sports Trophy.
NKU featured two student-athletes who were honored as GLVC Player
of the Year in 2005-06. They were Kristen Votapek (women’s
soccer) and David Shearer (men’s golf). Three NKU standouts
- men’s basketball player Billy Finnell, volleyball player
Kristina Eisenmenger and women’s soccer player Alex Armstrong
- earned GLVC Freshman of the Year honors in their respective sports.
In addition, four NKU coaches - Todd Asalon in baseball, Daryl
Landrum in men’s golf, Bob Sheehan in women’s soccer
and Nancy Winstel in women’s basketball - earned GLVC Coach
of the Year honors.
NKU also won the 2005-06 GLVC Commissioner’s Cup, a trophy
awarded for performance in 10 selected sports. Institutions count
their best five finishes in both men’s and women’s sports.
It marked the third time in four years NKU has won the GLVC Commissioner’s
Cup. NKU finished with 79 points in the GLVC Commissioner’s
Cup standings to repeat as the winner. SIUE finished second in the
standings with 77.5 points.
