HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,
Ky. - Former Northern Kentucky University pitcher Derrik Moeves
just completed his first professional season for the Class A Williamsport
(Pa.) Crosscutters.
Moeves appeared
in 24 games for the Crosscutters and posted a 3-4 record with a
4.12 earned run average. Moeves was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates
in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball draft in June, and
he was assigned to Williamsport after signing a contract.
In 39 1/3 innings
on the mound for the Crosscutters, Moeves struck out 32 batters
and walked 22. He also allowed just one home run the entire season.
Moeves, a 6-foot-3 right-hander
and a graduate of Highlands High School, became NKU’s all-time
career strikeout leader last season with 259. He posted a 7-5 record
with a 2.34 earned run average in 2005 and struck out 99 batters
in 84 2/3 innings on the mound.
Moeves also had seven
complete games and two shutouts in 2005. He was named second team
All-Great Lakes Valley Conference and All-North Central Region.
As a sophomore, Moeves
was named both the GLVC and North Central Region Pitcher of the
Year. He also earned third team NCAA Division II All-America honors
in 2004.
In three years at NKU,
Moeves won 18 games and ranks ninth all-time in school history in
that category. He also set an NKU single-season record in 2004 with
102 strikeouts.
