HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University junior pitcher Derrik Moeves was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Tuesday.

Moeves, a 6-foot-3 right-hander and a graduate of Highlands High School, became NKU’s all-time career strikeout leader this season with 259. He posted a 7-5 record with a 2.34 earned run average in 2005 and struck out 99 batters in 84 2/3 innings on the mound.

Moeves also had seven complete games and two shutouts in 2005. He was named second team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference and All-North Central Region.

As a sophomore, Moeves was named both the GLVC and North Central Region Pitcher of the Year. He also earned third team NCAA Division II All-America honors in 2004.

In three years at NKU, Moeves won 18 games and ranks ninth all-time in school history in that category. He also set an NKU single-season record in 2004 with 102 strikeouts.

In addition, NKU junior right-hander Paul David Patterson was drafted in the 44th round by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. Patterson posted a 3-4 record with a 3.88 ERA in 2005.
