HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky Universitys Liz Holmes has been named Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in volleyball. Holmes, a freshman middle hitter and a graduate of Mercy High School in Cincinnati, recorded 69 kills and finished with a .466 hitting percentage last week as the Norse posted a 4-0 record at the Ashland Volleyball Classic. She also collected two double-doubles and had 13 total blocks. She hammered down a team-leading 22 kills Saturday as NKU knocked off previously unbeaten Ashland University in four games. Holmes also had a .425 hitting percentage in that match and two blocks as the Norse picked up the road victory. During a win over Walsh (Ohio) University on Friday, Holmes served four straight points to rally NKU from a 29-24 deficit in the second game to a 36-34 victory. Holmes slammed down a kill to tie the game at 34-34, and, after a Walsh attacking error gave NKU a 35-34 lead, the freshman finished off the stanza by converting another attack for a 36-34 Norse win. She also had 15 kills and a .609 hitting percentage during a three-game win over West Virginia Wesleyan College. Holmes averaged 4.93 kills and 2.53 digs per game for the week to earn the GLVC honor for the first time in her career. Holmes currently has 160 kills and a team-leading .370 hitting percentage for NKU, which has won four straight matches to improve to 7-4. She also tops the Norse with 31 total blocks and ranks No. 2 on the team with 17 service aces. NKU will open up GLVC play at 2 p.m. Saturday against Bellarmine University in Regents Hall. NKU was picked as the preseason GLVC favorite by the league coaches. |
